Tie pins are have been a stylish status symbol since they were first worn by wealthy English gentlemen at the beginning of the 19th century to secure their (equally as stylish) silk cravats.

I love antique accessories for their historic practicality and handsome looks, but the tie pin is one of my all time favourites.

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while now you will probably be aware of my attraction to antique jewellery and obscure bits and bobs, so it may come as no surprise that I have decided to introduce tie pins to my range of workshop wiled wares.

Recently I had the pleasure of creating a custom made tie pin for a well known New Zealand celebrity, NZ’s Next Top Model Judge, Model, Presenter, and one of my style heroes, Colin Mathura-Jeffree.

Colin is not only one of our nation’s best dressed gentlemen, but is also an extremely nice guy, so it was an absolute pleasure and privilege to make this piece for someone so spectacularly cool and distinguished.

I came up with a unique design, using a black star diopside stone, which hails from India and has a beautiful star which can be seen when held into the light.

It was important to me to weave Colin’s Indian heritage into the design, so the stone suited perfectly.

The design resembles a feather, created to complement Colin’s unique style, and is made with sterling silver.

Here are a few images showing the creative process.
